ATTIC BLACK- FIGURED LEKYTHOS

First half of V c. B.C.

Light orange-brown clay with deeper red-orange surface wash. Black glaze fired red on inside and outside of rim, outside of handle, neck and shoulder. Top of the mouth, several lines below frieze, side and bottom of the foot all reserved. The scenery shown schematically: warrior in long tunic on chariot, four horses (only two heads depicted) with front legs off the ground. Behind them Athena, wearing chiton, himation, aegis and Attic helmet, leaps toward the driver, spear in hand. Incised contour for horses. Checkerboard pattern of dots above main frieze. Row of rays with dots above on shoulder. Intact. H. 5.5″ (14 cm).
